Cobolli and Paolini Reach Wimbledon Quarter-Finals, Britain's Fery Fights On

July 6, 2026 · Reuters

Two Italian stars advanced to the last eight at Wimbledon on Monday, while British wildcard Arthur Fery pulled off a thrilling win to keep his tournament alive.

Two Italian tennis players, Flavio Cobolli and Jasmine Paolini, both moved into the quarter-finals at Wimbledon on Monday, July 6. Cobolli beat Australian fifth seed Alex de Minaur in straight sets on a very hot afternoon on Court One. The match was even stopped twice because fans in the stands felt sick from the heat. After his win, Cobolli was spotted cooling off with some ice cream.

Cobolli, the ninth seed, said playing on Court One for the first time was an amazing experience. He told reporters he played one of his best matches ever on grass, which is always a tricky surface. He is proud to have reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals two years in a row. Earlier this season, he also made it to the final of the French Open before losing to Alexander Zverev.

De Minaur was deeply upset after the loss. He said one player went out to win the match, and the other went out not to lose — and he admitted he was the second one. 'It breaks me inside,' he said, adding that he puts in many hours of hard work for moments like these. He has never made it past the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam tournament.

On Centre Court, Paolini beat Eala 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the last eight. Eala, who is from the Philippines, had been a crowd favorite during her exciting run at Wimbledon. Paolini is the 13th seed and has been dealing with a foot injury for much of the season. She said she is enjoying playing tennis again and staying positive even when things get tough.

Paolini will next face Ukrainian player Marta Kostyuk in the quarter-finals. Kostyuk, the 12th seed, beat American qualifier Ashlyn Krueger 6-4, 6-4 on Court Two. Kostyuk said the match felt stressful because she was the favorite and felt extra pressure. The heat also made it harder to stay focused, she added.

Czech player Linda Noskova beat former Australian Open champion Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6 to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time. The 21-year-old said she hopes to follow in the footsteps of Czech Wimbledon champions like Petra Kvitova and Barbora Krejcikova. Noskova will face Belgian player Elise Mertens, who beat Czech player Marie Bouzkova 6-4, 6-4. It was a strong day for young players making their mark at the Grand Slam.

The biggest cheer from British fans came in the evening when wildcard Arthur Fery beat fellow wildcard Grigor Dimitrov 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in almost four hours. Fery is now the last British player left in the singles draw, giving home fans a hero to cheer for. American Taylor Fritz also advanced, beating Kazakh 10th seed Alexander Bublik 7-6, 6-4, 6-4. Fritz has now reached the Wimbledon quarter-finals four times in the last five years.

I'm proud and happy to reach a second quarter-final in a row here at Wimbledon. That means a lot for me.
